Review of the day

Early on, I got the feeling that it was going to be one of those days…

Uno Valerso was the first tip to run - and simply, he wasn’t up to the task.

Considering a few of the fancied horses in the race under-performed, I would have expected him to be right in the mix - but that didn’t happen.

Instead, the race was won by 20/1 shot, Kauto Riko.
I tipped him the last time he ran (when he was also a big price) - but he was pulled up after making a mistake at the very first fence.

Not the best of starts to the day, then…

Next it was Magic Saint.

He ran OK - but was no match for the 2 other market leaders: Hells Kitchen and Janika.
I suspected they had the ability to win - but thought Magic Saint was the more solid option.

Maybe he was: but they came good - and he was well beaten by them both.

Hmmm….

Then things got really bad !

I went for 2 in the Long Walk: Agrapart and Sam Spinner.

The theory was that they would both be suited by the soft ground - and that Sam Spinner would provide a nice lead for Agrapart.

Up the straight he would then either lengthen away - or Agrapart would run him down…

Instead, Sam Spinner ballooned the first hurdle - and then decanted his jockey at the second !

If that wasn’t bad enough, it meant that Agrapart was left with no lead and was just a sitting duck for the rest of the field.

The really frustrating thing, was that with the 3 Henderson horses running pretty much as expected, the race was there to be won.
However, it was Paisley Park who coped with the ground and took advantage of the way things panned out…

By this point, I was feeling in need of a break - and Daklondike looked briefly as if he might provide one.

Certainly when he jumped into the lead at the third last, I was feeling quietly confident.

A strong stayer up against a couple of more doubtful stayers, I didn’t think he would get beaten.

And then some how, Ballyarthur began to pull away from him - and jumping the last, it was clear that Daklondike was going to be another addition to the list of odds on in-running losers.

Some days, things just won’t go your way…

But then - something weird happened: Daklondike rallied and Ballyarthur began to falter - and for once (and I do mean once !), a TVB tip grasped victory from the jaws of the defeat - rather than the other way round.

What a bizarre feeling !!

I then became hopeful that a day which threatened to deliver so little, might deliver quite a lot !

Theos Charm was the biggest bet of the day - and I was absolutely sure he would run well.

In truth, I wasn’t absolutely sure he would win - and ultimately that’s how it panned out.

He ran a fair race to finish third - but was no match for the winner, The Hollow Ginge (who I didn’t fancy - but the market did !).

Flying Tiger was the final tip to run on what was turning into a bit of a roller coaster of a day - and he ran really well.

The trouble with him, is that he refuses to settle - and even in a 21 runner handicap, run at a strong pace, that was the case.

He was still going strongly turning in - but his earlier exertions then began to tell and after jumping the penultimate hurdle in second place, he faded.

It was a good effort - and I’ve no real complaints.
Maybe he would have benefited from stronger handling, rather than a 7lb claim…

There was just the one Mention on the day - and Flying Angel ran a fair race without looking likely to win.

In truth, nothing bar the winner, ever looked likely to win - which would have been less unusual, if the winner hadn’t been a 9 year old, making his UK debut - and sent off a 70 on BF !

His name was Valtor - but they way he took apart a strong field, looked more like a performance from the late, great Vautour !

All in all, an interesting day..!

Daily write-up - Dec 22nd

There are 4 NH meetings today: at Ascot, Haydock & Newcastle in the UK - plus Thurles in Ireland.

The final days racing before Christmas - and with an absolute glut of racing scheduled for the 4 days following, it’s maybe not too surprising that things are a bit quiet.

Certainly, there is little of interest at either Newcastle or Thurles - but Ascot and Haydock both put on decent cards.

The main factor for consideration today, is the state of the ground.

The rain has arrived with a vengeance over the past week and the ground at both courses, is edging towards heavy.

We could see that for ourselves at Ascot yesterday - and I suspect it will be just the same (if not worse !) at Haydock.

I’ve ended up with tips in 6 races.
It wasn’t hard to find horses I wanted to tip - however, the markets are so switched on, finding a price edge, is a real challenge (and we always need a bit in the price !).

Issuing the tips is also tricky - and if I can find time, I intend to create a survey, to try and get a better feel for how people back the tips (so I can look to optimise how and when I send them out).

Anyway, that’s for another day - for today, we have the rationale for the tips plus my thoughts on the days other big races…

Ascot

1:50

I must admit, Magic Saint is a borderline call in this…
He was an eye catcher last time out, when he made his UK debut at Haydock.
He travelled really well in that race - but didn’t get home.
Whether that was because his stamina gave out - or because he needed the run - I’m not sure - but hopefully it was one of those reasons !
He’s back today, with the benefit of that run under his belt - and over 2 furlongs less.
He also gets really soft ground - so I suspect these are his perfect conditions.
If he is beaten today, there won’t be any excuses !
The trouble is, he faces a host of potentially dangerous rivals.
That said, they each have a question mark over them - whereas he doesn’t…
Janika is making his UK debut - and his French form doesn’t look quite as good to me, as that of Magic Saint.
Hells Kitchen is a potentially huge talent - but he takes a lot of controlling - and he will need to dominate the race, if he is to win it.
That won't be easy, up against Royal Regatta and Janika - both of whom also like to front run.
De Dollar Man is probably the most solid of Magic Saints rivals - but he does seem to have limitations.
Of the outsiders, then Gardefort is definitely the one I’m most wary of.
I tipped him last time, on his seasonal debut - but he couldn’t get in to the race that day.
Maybe he needed the run, in which case he could be very dangerous today.
I could have had an official saver on him - but it’s not a race that I want to get in deep on. I’ll therefore just back him to get my stake back, in case Magic Saint doesn’t manage to deliver.

2:25

I’m hoping that the very soft ground provides the key angle into this race - with Sam Spinner and Agrapart, the 2 who are both guaranteed to act on it - and also get the trip…
The former was a really impressive winner of the corresponding race, 12 months ago - and if he can repeat that form, he will win again today.
However, he’s disappointed on his 3 subsequent runs - and whilst there has been a   plausible reason on each occasion, there won’t be an excuse if he’s beaten today.
The application of first time cheek pieces is a little concerning, as it suggests connections think his mind may not be on the job…
However, if they do get him to re-focus, then in what are his ideal conditions, he is very much the one to beat…
That said, Agrapart comes with fewer risks - and is therefore the main bet in the race.
He too will have ideal conditions - and his defeat of Wholestone at Cheltenham in January, confirmed he is up to this class.
He ran a nice race on his seasonal debut, behind that horse at Aintree, where both trip and ground wouldn’t have been ideal.
That should have put him spot on for today and I would expect him to reverse the form with Unowhatimeanharry (who finished just ahead of him).
Nicky Henderson sets a poser by running 3 in the race.
All 3 are making their seasonal debuts - and are unproven over the trip, on todays ground.
Call me Lord and Soul Emotion both have huge potential - but I can’t see them getting beaten up, in order to win todays race.
With the ground likely to be too soft for Paisley Park - and the other 4 not quite up to this class, the race does look there for either Sam Spinner (if back to his best) - or Agrpart, to take advantage.
Let’s hope that’s how it pans out !

3:00

With doubts of one form or another, over every runner, this races looks a bit too tricky to get involved with…
Gold Present is favourite - but he’s far from guaranteed to handle the very soft ground. Thomas Patrick will have no issue with the ground - but he needs to bounce back from a poor run last time, in the Ladbroke Trophy.
Full Glass should handle the ground - but he’s unproven over the trip (and there’s a question mark over his jumping); whilst Benatar should also cope with the ground - but is unproven over the trip and will need to settle better than he often does, if he is to get home…
Jammin Masters is potentially interesting - but he lacks experience for a race of this nature - and that’s not really factored in to his price; whilst Otago Trail could bounce on the back of a big comeback run, after along absence - and he also looks harshly handicapped.
Flying Angel is definitely the most interesting of those at bigger prices - though he’s running from a mark 4lb higher than when well beaten in the Ladbroke Trophy.
It is possible that his last run came a bit too quickly - so he could have a valid excuse for under-performing…
There are even bigger question marks over all the others - hence my reticence to get involved !
If I was to play in the race, it would probably be with Flying Angel - though he is risky.
I like Jamin Masters best, of those at the head of the market market - but I would want a bigger price than 7/1 to take a risk on him handling the rise in grade.

3:35

There are 21 runners in this race and it’s no exaggeration to say that I could make a case for at least 15 of them !
That would include the 2 official eye catchers: Mr Antolini and Cyrus Darius.
Both should relish the under-foot conditions - but Mr Antolini is creeping up the handicap (and is already quite exposed): whilst I’m just not sure that todays test will suit Cyruis Darius (I would prefer him in a smaller field).
I wouldn’t put anyone off having a small wager on both (Cyrus could be a decent back to lay in-running, as he’s a really strong traveller) - but I’m going with Flying Angel, as the bet in the race….
He’s another one who I’ve sided with a few times before - and I’m pretty convinced that he has a decent race in him (hopefully todays !).
Certainly, he is very well handicapped: he won the 2017 Fred Winter hurdle from a mark 1lb higher than he races from today - and I’d be pretty sure he’s improved since then (he’s still only 5).
Furthermore, he also has a decent 7lb claimer in the saddle today…
He should appreciate the likely strong pace (he can be keen in his races) - and whilst I’m not completely sure about him handling the ground, his record suggests he should be fine.
There is a question mark over his recent form (which is why he’s the price he is) - but, to be honest, I think it’s impossible to say what kind of form he is in.
2 of his 3 runs this season have been in small field chases (so totally irrelevant, so far as today race is concerned): whilst he was effectively brought down, in the other one…
Clearly he is no certainly - but I think he has as good a chance as any - and a better chance than most.
Therefore, he has to be worth a small play at a decent price….

Haydock

1:35

I have to be honest, I wanted to tip Ubaltique in this…
I tipped him 12 months ago, when he won the corresponding race - and everyone knows that this is his time of year (and his course - and his ground !)
The trouble is, because everyone knows, you can’t get a price on him.
He was a 4/1 shot at 9:00 this morning - and in a competitive 9 runner race, that is too short…
That’s particularly true, because based on last years race, there is nothing between him an Uno Valeroso.
In fact, the latter looked most likely to win that day - but dreadful jumps at the final 2 fences cost him dearly.
Despite being 4lb out of the handicap today, he’s 1lb better off with Ubaltique.
There should be little between them based on that form - so at 3 times the price, Uno Valerosso had to be the bet.
Even more so, because he shaped with distinct promise on his seasonal debut at Bangor - and historically has run very well on his second outing of the season.
Ofcourse this is not just a 2 horse race - and Shear Rock looks particularly dangerous based on his latest run behind Lady Buttons at Newbury.
Based on that run, he is definitely the one to beat - but he’s a horse who’s had issues in the past, so there must be a doubt about him stringing 2 good runs together.
Elixir du Gouet is the other one of particular interest, on his debut for Venetia - however, he’s impossible to assess…
In summary, I would expect Uno Valerosso to be in the mix - and he was value at this mornings price.
He’ll need a bit of luck if he is to win - but that’s invariably the case and he’s worth having on side.

2:40

Unlike Uno Valerosso, I don’t think Daklondike is guaranteed to run well - but if he does, I think he is more than capable of winning this…
He’s a bit of a moody character - and there must be a chance he won’t fancy it today.
However, connections are fully aware of that possibility - and the application of a first time visor strikes me as a significant move.
The hope is that the visor will cause him to race more keenly - and if that is the case, I’m pretty sure he has the ability to win.
3 wins from 6 runs last season, illustrate that he has plenty of talent - and as he’s only 6, he should still be improving.
I suspect that todays test is a minimum for him: however in the likely ground - and if he does race a bit more keenly, I’m happy that his undoubted stamina will come in to play.
Plenty of the others can be given a chance - though whether they will all cope with conditions, time alone will tell.
Kimberlite Candy is an improving sort - and could well be the main danger, as it’s a big ask for Duel at Dawn to win a race of this nature, on his seasonal debut.
Clan Legend has been well supported - primarily because of his record when fresh.
I respect that - but in todays ground, I would have some concerns about him tackling nearly 3 miles, for the first time.
The trip would also be the worry for Testify - even though he has very good course form, in heavy ground.
Of the outsiders, then I like veteran, Houblon des Obeaux, best.
He’s racing from a career low mark - and has a 7lb claimer on his back. At 16/1, he could be worth saving stakes on…

3:15

Theos Charm has a tremendous record over todays course and distance - and it’s hard to see him not going very close in this…
4 times, he’s run over todays course and distance - and he’s been placed on every occasion.
More than that, all 4 runs have been in significantly stronger races than todays - so he must have a very good chance, dropped in grade.
His most recent run was also at Haydock - but over a furlong further.
It was his seasonal debut - and the race took place on ground that was too quick for him.
In the circumstances, it wasn’t overly surprising to see him well beaten - but his mark has been dropped 3lb for the run - and that makes him look very competitively handicapped.
As is so often the case nowadays, when connections really fancy one, a decent 7lb claimer has been booked - this time in the shape of Rex Dingle.
In short, everything is in place for Theos Charm to run a massive race - the only question is whether one of his rivals will be a bit too good for him…
My feeling (and hope !) is that they won’t - though there are a couple lurking, who are sufficiently well handicapped to be dangerous, if they are at their best.
One is Tawseef and the other Closing Ceremony.
However, both are probably past their peak - and Closing Ceremony is returning from a significant absence.
Both also like to lead - as does Florri Knox - so that’s another reason for thinking they won’t spoil Theos party !
He likes to race prominently - but in behind the leaders - which should be ideal, if there is a strong pace.
He’s not a certainty - but I do think he was a good bet at the 3/1 available this morning…

Here’s hoping for a great day ahead !

Review of the day

The ground at Carlisle, wasn’t as soft as I expected today - and ultimately, I think that cost Chef Doeuvre…

Having said that, when it looked as if he was going to get an uncontested lead, I thought he might get away with it.

However, as soon as Danny Cook took him on with Lough Derg Farmer, I knew he was in trouble.

He ran a fair enough race: keeping on to take third place - and he remains very much one to have on side - when he gets to run on bottomless ground…

There was only one other tip on the day - and Choungaya couldn’t avenge last months defeat by Easy Game.

In fairness, he also ran a reasonable race - and jumping the second last, briefly looked as if he might go close.
However, he was then swamped by the closers - and that was that !

Earlier on the Carlisle card, Revert Cust made a couple of jumping errors, just as the pace was quickening - and could never get on terms in the novice handicap chase.

Isaactown Lad, on the other hand, was a dour winner of handicap hurdle – having drifted to 6/1, at the off.
Falshjack dead heated for third in the same race - but his price remained constant, at around 4/1.

Finally, Russian Bill finished an eye catching sixth, under relatively tender handling, at Navan.
He’s unlikely to be dropped much more than a pound - but he could still be of interest in a handicap over the Christmas period…

Daily write-up - Dec 16th

There are 3 NH meetings this afternoon: at Carlisle and Southwell in the UK - plus Navan in Ireland.

In truth, it’s a low-key afternoon - with all 3 of the meetings, not much better than you would expect to see during the mid-week.

Southwell, is particularly uninspiring - and easily swerved…

However, there are 3 fair races taking place at Carlisle - and a couple of decent events at Navan.

I’ve ended up with a tip at both venues and it would certainly be nice to end, what has been a frustrating weekend, with a winner (or two !).

Here’s the rationale for the tips - plus my thoughts on the other main races…

Carlisle

1:55

It was a shame to see Spiders Bite withdrawn from this, on account of the ground…
I know that he’s got a stated preference for good ground - but my view, based on his action, is that he would be better on soft !
Alas, we’re not going to find out…
Luckofthedraw has been installed favourite - and whilst I can understand that, I do have some reservations about him on heavy ground.
It’s not that I don’t think he will handle it - just that it will put more of an emphasis on stamina - and he is unproven over todays trip.
He’s also a free going sort - so he will need to relax, if he’s going to get home…
In truth, a case of sorts, can be made for all of the runners - and the market has them positioned about right.
Reverant Cust is probably the one I would side with, if forced.
I’m a big admirer of his trainer (he places his small string of horses particularly well) - and the horse won well enough on his chasing debut at Catterick.
He’ll need to step up on that form - but I suspect he is capable of doing just that.
That said, it’s such an open race, I wouldn’t really want to get too heavily involved with anything…

2:25

Despite having won his 2 starts for Jonjo - and looking on a big upward curve, Aspen Colorado is vulnerable in this…
His wins have seen him raised 15lb in the handicap - but that’s not the main issue.
He steps up in trip today - and on heavy ground, there has to be a serious question mark over his stamina.
He has run poorly on his 2 previous attempts at 3 miles - and also on his one run on heavy ground.
In the circumstances, you would feel obliged to look elsewhere for the winner…
Flashjack definitely has a chance - as he will relish both the ground and the trip.
I just wonder whether he may be a shade high in the handicap…
Isaactown Lad is handicapped to win - provided he isn’t in decline.
He’ll be 12 in a fortnights time, so that must be a possibility - however, he too will relish todays test.
Kris Spin is another who will love the conditions - but I suspect he will need the run.
He’s maybe one for a pre-race back with a view to laying in running (ideally, just before he starts to tire !)
I find it difficult to choose between Flashjack and Isaactown Lad - and neither is a huge price (around 9/2).
If one of them drifts to around 6/1, then it could be worth getting involved.

3:00

I’m really hoping that the ground at Carlisle is barely race-able - because that’s just how Chef Doeuvre likes it !
I remember watching him win in desperate ground at Hereford, a couple of seasons back - and he was quite a sight.
On a day, when horses were struggling to get their feet out of the ground - and few completed their races - he just galloped on relentlessly, seemingly without a care in the world…
On the back of that win, he was rated 135 - and his future looked bright.
However, things haven’t turned out that way…
He’s run 7 times since then - and has been beaten on each occasion.
In fairness, he’s not had conditions in his favour too often - and his best subsequent run, was back on heavy at Ayr in January.
He finished second over hurdles that day - and it was his final outing for Warren Greatrex…
He is now trained by Sam England and he had his first run for her at Uttoxeter, last month.
That was in a fair race - and he ran pretty well, to finish fourth.
He forced the pace that day (as is his want) - and only tired up the home straight.
I would expect the run to have brought him on - and back on his favoured surface, he has to be off interest today...
Certainly from a handicapping perspective then his chance is clear, as he is running off a mark of just 120.
In truth, this doesn’t look the strongest of races, with both Samstown and Kilbree Chief, having a lot to prove on the back of long absences.
Lough Derg Farmer has a similar profile to Chef Doeuvre - but he is unproven in todays ground.
As a consequence, Kilcullen Flem and Lowanbehold, look the main dangers.
The issue with the former, is the trip (he ideally wants further); whilst hopefully the latter just isn’t as well handicapped as Chef Doeuvre.
Time will tell, I guess..!

Navan

12:30

I’m sure that most of you recall Choungayas last race at Navan, when he was agonisingly run out of things, close home.
Even by TVB standards, that was a tough one, as in addition to him, I’d tipped Magnium in the race - and both managed to trade odds on in running - and get beaten !
Their conqueror then, Easy Game, is back to take them on again this afternoon - and you have to think it will be very close again, between the 3 of them.
They were separated by just a head and a neck that day - and meet on the same terms this afternoon.
As a consequence, prices of 10/3, 8/1 and 16/1, don’t make a lot of sense !
Ofcourse, in a way, it’s understandable: Easy Game did win - and he is trained by Willie Mullins - but I think we have to be prepared to go against that tide !
In truth, this isn’t just a case of taking the value, as I think Choungaya should have won that race.
He kicked on approaching the final hurdle and was around 2 lengths clear, when a sloppy jump, cost him ground and momentum.
If he had hurdled cleanly, I think we would have got a different result.
Rachael Blackmore takes over in the saddle this afternoon - and hopefully she will be able to get the horse to ping the last rather than clatter through it !
Ofcourse, this isn’t just a 3 horse race…
Rhinestone is the second representative from Joseph O’Brien’s stable - and he gets Mark Walsh on board this afternoon.
He’s a horse of massive potential - but he’s very inexperienced and I do wonder if he might need a little more time.
The same is true for Defi Blue, who represents Gigginstown and Gordon Elliott.
On balance, I’d rather side with the battle hardened runners.
Which brings us back to Easy Game, Magnium - and Choungaya…

1:00

This is a relatively valuable race - and with 22 runners, it will take a bit of sorting…
Calie Du Mesnil has been installed favourite - but a lot of that is down to her connections (Mullins and Walsh) - and if I were to get involved with the race, I would be inclined to take her on…
Dinaria des Obeaux looks the most likely winner, to me.
She is now better known as a chaser - and is rated 11lb higher in that discipline (which means she could be well handicapped over hurdles).
Following a couple of runs over fences, she should be fit - and she too has impeccable connections (Elliot and Kennedy).
Walk to Freedom is the other one at the head of the market, who I like.
He’s a bit of a character, and he can be very head strong - but Robbie Power was brilliant on him last time and he won well.
He runs off a mark 7lb higher this afternoon - but can probably defy that, provided he gives himself a chance !
As you would expect, in a race of this nature, there are plenty of others who have a chance - however, of those at big prices, the one that interests me most, is Russian Bill.
He was very decent a couple of seasons back - but had been off the track for 2 years, prior to his run at Naas, last month.
He didn’t run badly that day and I would expect him to improve for the outing.
I suspect he’s still capable of winning a fair race - and it may possibly be this one !
That said, there’s a lot of guesswork involved - and he could just as easily, need another run, in order to gain full fitness.
I’ll be keeping a close eye on him though - and maybe having a small bet - just in case !

Here’s hoping for a great day ahead !

Review of the day

When Cliffs of Dover crossed the line this afternoon, he became the 4th tip in the last 8, to have traded odds on in-running - and finished third !

Obviously, you do have periods like that - but if the 4 of them had won, it would have been a profit of over 25pts - and swing on the P&L of around 30pts !

His was another hard one to take.

He was settled at the back - which I knew was a possibility - even though I would have preferred to see him stride on.
In fairness, he settled quite well - and when he started to make progress between the final 2 flights, it looked a case of how far.

But alas, it was not be be.
First Irish Roe - and then Equus Amadeus, went past him.

He traded at 1.1 in running - but that ultimately counted for little…

Katpoli couldn’t quite match that, as he only traded at 1.33 !

In truth, he did well to get as close as he did, as he was far too free in the early stages - and his jumping was poor.

With the UK debutantes all running below market expectations, he looked to have only Fanfan du Soleil to worry about.

However, both of them tired up the hill - and Nelson River swooped past.

As with the Doncaster race, I had picked out all the right horses to focus on - but ended up selecting the wrong one…

Sands Cove was the only other tip on the day - and although he didn’t trade odds on in running, he did run very well (for a 16/1 shot).

He moved nicely in behind the leaders - and approaching the fourth last, I felt he  had a real chance.
However, he then started to struggle - before running on late.

We were almost certainly on him one run too early - though he may not be 16/1 next time !

Back over at Cheltenham, there was more frustration, as the rain didn’t arrive in the quantity forecast - and Brain Power duly took advantage.

I would have taken a risk on him on good to soft ground - but there was no way of knowing how much rain would fall by 3:00.

The answer was not a lot - and he duly bounced back to his best.

Earlier in the afternoon, Le Breuil had run another good race - but managed to find one too strong for him in the shape of Drovers Lane.
Le Breuil looked to have been given a great chance, when OK Corral was taken out because of the lack of rain - but he was unlucky to bump into another smart one…

Ozzie the Oscar was yet another to benefit from the ground remaining relatively quick - and his attitude in a battle was too much for Bun Doran.

Frodon put up a great performance to defy top weight in the days big race.
It’s a bit surprising that he’s not won a graded race, because he definitely looks graded class.
Maybe he’s at his best in the deep mid winter, rather than in the spring…

I was right to be wary of the favourites in the novice hurdle - as neither one was placed.
The race was won by Rockpoint, who I was put off because of his rating.
It’ll be a lot higher after today, however !

Finally, Ratoute Yutty was ridden completely differently in the finale - and ran quite well - but had no answer to Sensulano.

I had been quite impressed by the winner when she won at Ascot - and again today, she showed a tremendous attitude to grind out a victory…

TVB.

Daily write-up - Dec 15th

There are 4 NH meetings today: at Cheltenham, Doncaster and Hereford in the UK - plus Fairyhouse in Ireland.

It’s the second day of the International meeting at Cheltenham - but the races don’t look as Punter friendly as they did yesterday.
Worse than that, rain is due to hit the course at some point during the day, so to an extent, we have to guess on ground conditions.
In the circumstances, there is little option other than to tread cautiously…

Doncaster has again drawn a series of small fields, due to the relatively quick ground.
They passed their early morning inspection, but there are often NRs when there has been frost in the ground - so again, it’s not really a meeting you can launch in to with a great deal of confidence.

It’s low grade fayre on offer at Fairyhouse - so in a way, the meeting at Hereford should present the best betting opportunities on the day.

There are a couple of class 2 races - and most of the fields have a nice shape.
However, I can’t help but feel that there are a few ‘plot’ horses running - so yet again, caution needs to be the order of the day.

All in all then, not the best betting day !

Despite that, I’ve managed to find 3 tips: by looking far and wide - and showing a bit of patience !
Hopefully they will justify my efforts !

Here’s my rationale for them - plus my thoughts on all of the Cheltenham races…

Cheltenham

I wouldn’t usually look to get involved with a juvenile hurdle - particularly at this point in the season - but on a day when opportunities are very thin on the ground, there does look to be one in this race…
Katpoli finished fourth in the juvenile event run at the November meeting.
That was probably the strongest race of its type, run so far this season - and he was only beaten 4 lengths.
More than that, jumping the second last, he looked the most likely winner (traded 2.2 in-running) - but he didn’t finish off his race as well as 3 of his rivals.
It was still a big step up on his debut run in this country at Huntingdon. He won that race, but was very erratic.
The suggestion is therefore that he is improving - and I’m hoping he will take another step forward today…
If he does, then I think he will take a bit of beating.
For a start, 3 of his rivals are making their UK debuts.
I guess one of them might be a star - but even if that is the case, horses coming over from France invariably improve for their first run (as was the case with Katpoli).
If one of them is to beat him today, it’s likely to have to be quite special.
As a consequence, Fanfan du Seuil looks the one that Katpoli has to beat.
He was a comfortable winner of a minor event at Exeter last time, having fallen when beaten on his UK debut at Chepstow.
Quel Destin was runner up in that Chepstow race - and he subsequently won the Cheltenham race that Katpoli finished fourth in.
The collateral form line suggests there should be very little between Fanfan du Seuil and Katpoli.
The 3lb the former has to concede could therefore prove crucial - and that, coupled with the fact he is half the price of Katpoli, put me firmly in the latters camp.
The only other one worthy of a mention, is Nelson River.
He won his sole race over hurdles - so in theory, could be anything !
However, it would be unusual for his connections to win a race of this nature, at Cheltenham.
On balance, Katpoli is the sensible option…

Le Breuil sets the standard for this race, courtesy of his second to Count Meribel at the November meeting.
He ran really well that day - and looked likely to win, jumping the last - but Count Meribel was a bit too strong for him, on the run to the line.
That’s decent novice form - and he probably matched it a fortnight ago, when finishing third to Santini at Newbry.
Again, Le Breuil, jumped and travelled well - he just found a couple of rivals too strong for him at the business end of the race.
I guess they may happen again today - and if he is beaten, then OK Corral looks the one most likely to defeat him.
He’s making his chasing debut - but was a very high class hurdler.
A lot will depend on how he takes to the bigger obstacles - but if he’s good over his fences, he could have too many gears for Le Breuil, close home…
Of the others, then Jenkins is very closely matched with Le Breuil, on their run at the last Cheltenham meeting: whilst Drovers Lane is stepping up markedly in class and therefore has a bit to prove.

1:20

This is another race where it is hard to see any sort of an angle…
Bun Doran was a really impressive winner at the November meeting - but he’s been raised 10lb for that win, which will make things harder.
He still looks just about the most likely winner - but there is no value in a price of 2/1.
The trouble is, it’s hard to construct a solid case for anything against him.
The distance looks a bit short for Hell’s Kitchen: Top Gamble wants softer ground: Ozzie the Oscar and Yorkist are handicapped to the max; and Theinval showed little on his seasonal debut…
One of them will have to follow Bun Doran home (assuming he wins !) - and Ozzie the Oscar looks the most solid option.
However, I really don’t feel strongly about him - and 5/1 is no more than a fair price…
Time to move on !

1:55

This looks a potential minefield !
With the threat of significant rain - and a host of possible pace angles, it really could end up 15 horse lottery…
Certainly, there are at least half a dozen horses that I’ve considered tipping in the race - and when that happens, I know the best thing to do, is to leave it alone !
The issue, is the degree of uncertainty.
The race could be run on good ground - or it could be run on soft.
There could be a pace burn up - or one of the runners could get an easy lead.
Looking at it now, there are just too many unknowns, to justify getting involved…
In terms of those of interest, then War Sound and Baron Alco were top of my list - though both will need to defy significant rises in the handicap - and that’s never easy…
The same is true for Mr Medic - who also has to prove himself at Cheltenham.
Full Glass could be interesting - particularly if the rain arrives: whilst Casablanca Mix could be well handicapped (assuming she gets round).
Guitar Pete should run his race - and may well get placed: Whilst Cobra de Mai is quite interesting at a very big price, if things pan out for him…
I guess all I would say, is that I wouldn’t be interested in Rather Be at 4/1 - though that doesn’t mean he can’t win !
If you want to bet in the race, then I suggest you just get out your lucky pin and hope for the best - it really does strike me as that kind of contest…

2:30

I’m not particularly keen on either of the market leaders in this: Aye Aye Charlie or  Doux Pretender, which suggests there should be a bet in the race - but if there is, I can’t find it !
Supremely Lucky and Rockpoint are the obvious ones to focus on: but the former won a very poor race at Southwell, last time: Whilst the latter was beaten in a handicap at Newbury, off a mark of 118..
That form is about 20lb shy of the level that should be required to win a race of this nature which makes it hard to support either of them.
The trouble is, the other 4 runners in the race, look even more limited !
As a consequence, I end up gravitating back to the 2 market leaders - but as I said at the beginning, I’m not keen on either of them !
Obviously something has to win the race - but as with the previous one, it’s outcome is likely to be decided by the weather, race pace and tactics - something I can only guess on, at this point in time…

3:05

This is yet another race, which I can’t see an angle in to…
The problem with this one, Is that I can see a reason why all 8 runners won’t win - but one of them is going to buck that !
Favourite, Summerville Boy, would be hard to beat, if he bounced back to his form of last season - but he ran very poorly on his seasonal debut at Newcastle and will have to improve massively on that.
I was half tempted to tip Brain Power - on his return to hurdles.
On official ratings he is the best horse in the race - and in receipt of weight, should take a lot of beating.
My concern with him, is that he has never run well at Cheltenham - or on soft ground…
The other one I considered, is Western Ryder.
He has a lot to do on form - but the application of cheek pieces could bring about improvement.
If his connections were bullish, I would buy into him - but their enthusiasm seems limited - and so therefore, is mine !
The New One would win this easily - if he were the same horse as he was a couple of seasons back - but I fear he has become ‘The Old One’ - and I’m not sure a visor will make sufficient difference.
Silver Streak is the runner with least question marks over him - but he shouldn’t really be good enough to win a race of this stature…
Again, I think this will be decided by conditions and tactics - and I don’t want to guess on how they will pan out…

3:40

The presence of Ratoute Yutty, makes this a race that has to be avoided…
She has clearly been plotted up by the Skeltons to scoop this valuable pot - and may well do just that.
She got a very eye catching ride on her UK debut, at Ascot last time.
She was extremely slowly away that day - and was never put in the race with any chance of winning.
Despite that, she was only beaten 6 lengths - up against some very decent rivals.
The action had the desired result, however and she could easily have a stone in hand of her opening mark of 122.
That said, she’ll need to have a few pounds in hand, as both Definitelyanoscar and Petticoat Tails are likely to be a bit ahead of their mark: whilst Sunsualno is an improving mare, with a good attitude.
With the 4 named horses at the head of the market - and the most likely winner, the favourite, there really is no angle into the race…

Hereford

12:00

This certainly isn’t a ‘big’ race - but hopefully I’ve left tipping in it late enough for you all to get on, without too many issues…
As I said last Sunday, when I tipped in a class 4 contest at Huntingdon, I will do occasionally, if I think there is a good opportunity - and I think Sands Cove has a fair chance in this…
He was a very good horse a few seasons back - and if he could repeat his effort when third in a grade 2 event at Kempton, 3 years ago, he would hack up in this…
Presumably he suffered some kind of injury however, as he was off the track for 2 years, prior to reappearing at Kempton in the spring.
He showed little that day - or on his subsequent outing at Southwell, the following month.
He then didn’t run until he reappeared at Market Rasen, last month.
That was in a fair race for the grade - and whilst he ultimately finished well beaten,  I thought he shaped with distinct promise.
With that run under his belt, we should find out this afternoon, how much of the old ability remains.
He has dropped to a mark of 103 - which is almost 2 stone lower than he was rated at his peak.
Clearly if the old ability has all gone, then that will be irrelevant - but I think there is a chance that a chunk of it remains.
The other interesting thing with him, is that he is trained by James Evans.
He had gone almost 18 months without a winner, prior to Lord Getaways victory on Sunday.
He had another winner at Bangor yesterday - and is now on the Hot trainers list !
I wouldn’t read too much into that, but it’s probably fair to assume the stable has turned a corner - and I don’t think it would be the biggest surprise in the world if Sands Cover provided him with his third winner in a week.
Fingers Crossed !

Doncaster

2:10

The drift on Cliffs of Dover has persuaded me to get involved with him, in this race…
He was a very decent juvenile hurdler - and whilst he has only run twice over hurdles since his juvenile campaign, he ran numerous times on the flat, during the last year and showed himself as good as ever.
2 wins on the AW last March, were followed by another at Haydock in August and on the back of those runs, he went off 4/1 fav for a hot race at Haydock on his return to hurdling.
However, he is a very keen going sort - and the attempts to get him to settle tha tday, failed.
As a result, he ran no sort of a race - and finished well beaten.
The handicapper dropped him 4lb for the run and his new mark of 136, looks to under-estimate his ability (assuming he can be ridden in a way that enables him to give his best).
Tactics are likely to prove crucial in this contest - and we’ll be looking for Harry Cobden to give him a good ride.
He faces a potential pace opponent in Chieftains Choice, so we certainly need that early battle to work out in our favour !
If it does - and Cliffs of Dover consents to settle, then I think he will take a lot of beating.
Irish Roe and Equus Amadeus looks the 2 most dangerous rivals: But the former arrives on the back of a heavy fall - and in truth, hasn’t looked as good this season as she did last; whilst the latter has to prove himself up to this class.
In short, if things pan out as I hope, then I reckon Cliffs of Dover should be good enough to win this.

Here’s hoping for a great day ahead !

Review of the day

I endured a frustrating morning, trying to tip the horses I wanted to tip - and things didn’t get a whole lot better this afternoon !

I ended up with 3 tips on the day - but non of them managed to come home in front.

In fairness, one of them nearly did.

Rolling Dylan might have been the longest price of the 3, but he ran the best race.

I could see him travelling strongly in behind the leaders and whilst I thought a mistake at the fourth last might end his challenge, it didn’t.
Coming into the straight he was still going well - but he just wasn’t quite as slick over the final 2 fences, as his more experienced opponents.
He still had every chance up the run in, but couldn't quite get back at them and was ultimately beaten a head and a neck.

It was a fine performance for a 20/1 shot - but that was slim consolation…

The Bay Birch was the days first tip to run - but she unseated at around half way.

It was a bit of an odd one, as she was nicely settled at the back and seemed to be jumping well.
I guess it only takes one mistake…

Sizing Granite was the final tip to run - but he ran poorly.

Again, he was settled at the back - but a couple of sloppy jumps cost him momentum and he could never get into the race.
It looked as if it all happened a bit to quickly for him - which was odd, considering he was stepping up in trip by a mile !

Maybe he is a spring time horse…

It was a slightly odd day, in so much as I was almost as interested to see how the horses I didn’t tip, ran !

There were 2 in particular, that I ducked, because their price had gone - and ultimately, that proved to be the right decision…

The first was Smaoineamh Ailinn.
She had been backed into 3/1 when I could tip - but was out to 5/1 at the off.

In truth, that didn't surprise me, as it was about the price she should have been, up against some unexposed rivals.

She made a race ending mistake at the fourth last - but regardless would have been no match for Al Dancer, who won by 11 lengths, easing up…

It was a slightly different story with Amazing Comedy.
Again, he had gone too short this morning at 3/1 (far too short !) - and he also drifted a little before the off.

He also ran the race I expected: travelling like the winner (1.33 in running) - but not getting home.

With Wounded Warrior not handling the course, it was left to Fact of the Matter to grind out a tenacious win.
I suggested he might be a fair EW bet at 7/1 this morning - and I managed to get a bit of 8/1 about him, around lunch time.

He was the solid option in the race - and he duly came up trumps…

Favourite , Angels Breath was a NR in the opener, leaving Elixir de Nutx to fend off Jarveys Plate; whilst Lil Rockerfeller unseated early in the novice chase, leaving The Worlds End to come home alone.
However, the form is both races must be a little suspect…
