Daily write-up - Jan 13th

There are 2 NH meetings today: at Kelso in the UK and Punchestown in Ireland.

Earlier in the week, when I looked at the 5 day declarations, I was optimistic that we might get a decent days racing - but it’s not really turned out that way…

Certainly, the card at Kelso is disappointing: there are two class 2 handicaps - but they have only mustered a total of 8 runners between them.
It’s down the ground - which remains unseasonally quick - but it’s still disappointing…

Field sizes aren’t the issue at Punchestown - but most of the races look unfathomable !
The Mullins/Elliott domination never helps - but that’s even more the case when you are looking at novice events…

Still, there will be other days that we can attack - the month has gone really well so far, so there’s certainly no need to try and force anything…

I have issued one small tip on the day.
It’s a recent eye catcher - and whilst it comes with risks - I’ve little doubt that the horse could hack up, if it’s on its ‘A’ game (or possibly even its ‘B’ game !)

Here’s the rationale behind the tip - and brief thoughts on a few of the days other races…

Kelso

1:35

You won’t see a much weaker field for a £20K race !
Just the 4 runners - and only 2 of them are in the handicap proper.
More than that, the 2 that are, have both got question marks hanging over them, as they are having their first runs over hurdles for new trainers…
I can’t help but feel that an opportunity to pick up some easy prize money has been missed, for a few 125+ rated 2 mile hurdlers…
In terms of what will win the race - then it’s anybodies guess !
The old Diamond King would hack up - but I’ll be a bit surprised if the old Diamond King turns up !; Prince Charmin should have a good chance based on his Irish form - but could easily need the run; Martila should be the selection by default - though he probably needs softer ground; whilst The Herd Garden shouldn’t have a chance from 10lb out of the handicap - but…!
If absolutely forced, I would probably side with The Herd Garden, as he’s the outsider of the field (so at least you get a decent price !) - however, I’m not being absolutely forced !!

2:05

The second class 2 race on the card - and there’s another disappointing turn out.
In fairness, this time it is just about numbers, as the 4 runners are all decent.
I suspect that Mount Mews is the most decent of them all - though he’s having his first run for Donald McCain and hasn’t been seen since last March, so his fitness has to be taken on trust.
As a consequence, a price of 2/1, has limited appeal…
If he’s not fully wound up, then I suspect that either Dimple or Eureu Du Boulay will take advantage - even though the latter may prefer a softer surface…
Again, it’s not a race that you could consider getting seriously involved with.
Mount Mews could outclass his rivals - but it’s just as likely that he will need the run.
A watching brief is recommended…

3:10

Henryville caught my eye last month, on his seasonal debut at Chepstow.
That was his first run for Peter Bowen and he raced with real zest, until tiring up the home straight.
I would expect him to have improved significantly for that run - and he also gets a hood re-applied today, which should help him settle.
If that is the case, then he probably has the ability to destroy todays field.
Certainly, that was the case when he was at his peak.
In the past, he has been rated 156 over hurdles and 153 over fences - but today he runs off a mark of just 137.
He’s down in class as well: a regular performer in class 1 races - he’s been running in class 2 races recently - but drops to class 3 today…
In terms of todays conditions, then he will get the good ground that he needs: and  whilst there is a slight question mark concerning the trip, he has run well at 3 miles before (though never won) - and todays small field is likely to mean that it won’t be a severe stamina test.
I think this essentially boils down to whether Peter Bowen has managed to rekindle the flame.
My impression, from the way he raced at Chepstow, was that the horse was enjoying the game again.
If that is the case, then I’ll be a little surprised if he doesn’t win…

Punchestown

1:15

In receipt of weight from all of his rivals, A Plus Tard is likely to take a bit of beating in this.
Following a decent Irish debut at Gowran in November, when he finished second, he went one better when winning a good quality race at Naas, just before Christmas.
In truth, he won’t need to significantly better that effort to win again today - and he very much looks the one to beat…
Unfortunately, that is reflected in a price of 11/8 - and whilst his jumping has looked sound, that is a very short price to take about any novice chaser !
At a bigger price, then I could see Jetz running well.
He did just that when I tipped him on his penultimate outing in the grade 1 Drinmore chase at Fairyhouse.
He didn’t really give himself a chance that day, as he wouldn’t settle - and it’s interesting to see that the hood has been removed today.
Apparently, the plan is to let him stride on - and there is a chance that those tactics could work.
Certainly, it could make him a decent in-running play (having backed pre-race).
The final one worthy of a mention, is Ben Dundee.
He’s disappointed the last twice, but I was quite impressed by him when he won over todays course and distance in November.
If he can recapture that form, he could outrun odds of 10/1.

2:50

This looks a race best tackled with a pin !
There are 2 runners for Mullins; 2 runners for Elliott - and 2 runners for the others !
The market thinks that Willie is most likely to saddle the winner, courtesy of Buildmeupbuttercup or Harrie - and it may be right !
Jan Maat looks to have a lot on - but all of the other 5, strike me as possible winners…
I wouldn’t be inclined to have a conventional bet in the race - but I suspect Felix Desjy will lead and travel strongly.
Whether he will last home, is a different matter - but it could make him another fair in-running play…

Here’s hoping for a great day ahead !

Review of the day

Sometimes I think, that picking the winners is the easy part of this game…

Give me a race to mull over - and more often than not, I’ll return you the winner - or at least a horse that will go pretty close.

But alas, that’s only half the game.

I then need to turn that opinion into a tip - and issue that tip at a time when you all have a chance of getting on.
More than that, that time needs to coincide with a point when the bookies are offering a fair price about the horse’s chance…

And unfortunately, getting all those stars to align is rarely an easy matter…

I was very keen on Impulsive Star today - but he nearly wasn’t a tip.

That sounds ridiculous, considering he was 10/1 across the board all day yesterday - and 14 on BF, 10 mins before the off.

However, in the window where I can tip, he was a best price of 15/2.

If he had gone down to 6/1 (far from impossible), I would have drawn the line - and a winner would have been missed (officially speaking).

That’s precisely what happened with Lord Napier.

I didn’t fancy him quite as much, but I did fancy him.

He was 7/1 all day yesterday - and I backed him at 10 on BF, 10 mins before the off.
However, in the window where I can tip, he was a best price 11/2 - and I felt that was just too short.

You could say that I showed great judgement and discipline - and maybe I did.
But you could also say I got lucky…

I’m honestly not sure how best to handle these situations (and similar happens most weeks).
There probably isn’t an answer - but when I say I think the price will drift, it’s because I think the horse is too short.
If you chase down those kind of prices, you’ll almost certainly end up regretting it…

Ofcourse, finding tips wasn’t the only problem that I experience this morning - actually issuing them didn’t go too smoothly either !

For whatever reason at least 20 of you found that my emails ended up in your junk folder (what does the Spam filter know, hey Winking smile ).

I don’t know why it happened: it seems to be connected to Gmail and bulk email - but I can’t offer much more than that, at this point in time.

If you did experience a problem this morning, you should mark the emails as ‘not junk’ - and add thevaluebettor@gmail.com to your contact list.

Hopefully that will resole the issue.

I will also post the emails in the forum - for a little while at least.

Anyway, on to the days action !

As I’ve just mentioned above, Impulsive Star made sure it was a good day, with a tenacious victory in the feature event at Warwick.

I’m sure a few of you picked up, that I really fancied him - though it’s always hard to be confident in a race of that nature.

Sam Waley Cohen settled him in behind the leaders - precisely as I’d hoped - and generally the horse jumped well.

He took up the running jumping the third last - but was being pressured himself, on the turn into the straight.

It looked as if Calet Mad might have his measure - but he’s not the most resolute, whilst Impulsive Star is a battler.
When he still had a chance jumping the last, I thought he’d come out on top.

And that’s exactly what happened, as he powered away on the run in, for what was ultimately, a comfortable win…

He was the second winner on the day, as Mercian Prince had already delivered at Kempton.

I wasn’t quite as keen on him - though I knew he had a good chance.

Jack Quinlan was very positive on him and set out to make all.
The horse didn’t let him down and jumped from fence to fence.

I suspect his rivals didn’t perform to their best (as I suspected might be the case) - but I think he would have destroyed them even if they had.

He ultimately eased to a 17 length win - and is definitely a contender for easiest winning tip of the season !

Secret Investor was the other big tip on the day, and I was slightly disappointed/frustrated by him.

There weren’t really any excuses, but I can’t help but feel he could have won.

His jumping fluctuated between brilliant and poor - and the poor jumps cost him both momentum and position.

Ultimately that scuppered his chance of winning - though he was a clear second best.

I certainly wouldn’t give up on him, because from what I saw today, the ability is there for him to take high rank - once his jumping becomes more consistent.

The days 2 other tips were more speculative - and ran accordingly !

Lever Du Soleil was ridden more aggressively today - but just wasn’t good enough.
At least we now know where we stand with him !

Rock on Rocky also raced prominently - and how he managed to stay upright after ploughing through the fourth fence, I’ve no idea.
I’m sure that cost him his chance - and in the circumstances, he did quite well to finish fourth.

He’s likely to be dropped to a rating below 120, on the back of that run - and he’ll win next time out - mark my words !!

Finally, a quick round up of for the Mentions:

5 of the 6 finished third - and the other one finished fourth - which is roughly what I expect from Mentions !

Lord Napier ran well - but lacked tactical pace: Barney Dwan was unlucky to be badly impeded - whilst First assignment was bullet well dodged !

All in all then, a very busy day - but as you know by now, that tends to be the way in the world of TVB !!

Daily write-up - Jan 12th

There are 4 NH meetings today: at Kempton, Warwick and Wetherby in the UK - plus Fairyhouse in Ireland.

The ongoing lack of rain (they actually watered the track at Kempton during the week - in January - can you believe that ?!) has resulted in a few small fields - but generally, it’s decent racing.

Certainly, there are a number of races of interest on the feature cards at Kempton and Warwick - whilst both Wetherby and Fairyhouse stage at least one decent contest apiece.

Certainly, I had no trouble finding horses I fancied - though the ongoing issue of finding decent bets, continues !

Take Lord Napier as an example…
I ‘found’ him on Thursday afternoon, at which point he was a general 8/1 shot (which was shorter than I expected).
However, he was then supported all day Friday - and by this morning, the best price was 9/2 !
In a 14 runner handicap - that’s just too short…
I guess he may drift - but then I have the dilemma over whether to tip a drifter.
Ofcourse there is no easy answer.
I could have tipped him on Friday (or even Thursday !) and some of you would have got a decent price - but some of you wouldn’t have been able to back him, and you would have found that understandably annoying.
The other option is to wait until later this morning - but then there is the danger that I will run out of time to produce the write-up - and I know that plenty of you value that as highly as the tips (if not more so, because it’s easier to back the positive mentions).
It’s all very frustrating, as I end up spending a lot of time finding horses which I can’t subsequently tip !

Anyway, there were ultimately 5 horse which I felt had winning chances - which were available at reasonable prices - and they have ended up as the days tips.

Here’s the rationale behind them - along with my thoughts on some of the races where I wasn’t able to tip !

Kempton

1:30

I tipped Mercian Prince when he won this corresponding race 12 months ago, and I think he’s worthy of support again today…
He’s a thoroughly consistent sort - and whilst he has to race off a mark 5lb higher today, than 12 months ago, he won his next race off a mark 2lb higher again, so he’s is still well handicapped…
His 4 subsequent defeats can all be excused for one reason or another:
The first was at the Cheltenham festival; whilst the second was also in a class 1 race - at the Ayr grand national meeting.
He ran pretty well in that contest - and it was a similar story on his seasonal return at Aintree.
His most disappointing run was his last one - but that was over the bare 2 miles at Ludlow and he’s a 2m4f horse.
It was also his first run after a wind op, and horses often perform best on their second run after such surgery…
The bottom line is, I would expect him to run his race - and that’s not the case will all 3 of his rivals.
Casse Tete almost certainly wants softer ground - and I would expect to see Jamie Moore riding, if he was really fancied; Poker School ran a reasonable race last weekend - but looks in the grip of the handicapper: Whilst it’s a similar story with Amour de Nuit, who also has little in hand of his mark.
It’s a tight race - but Mercian Prince is proven over course and distance and in the conditions - and I’m hopeful that will give him an edge over his rivals.

2:05

On official ratings, all 5 runners in this have a chance - but I expect the finish to be fought out by the market leaders, Charbel and Top Notch.
Both are very good horses - who, though maybe not quite capable of winning at the very highest level, are capable of placing.
That’s not the case with the other 3 runners and I’ll be a little surprised if that class edge, doesn’t prove decisive…
In terms of which one of the big 2 is likely to come out on top, then that’s a little harder to call…
I would expect Speredek to make the running - and for Charbel to track him.
Charbel is likely to attack early in the home straight and then try to fend off Top Notch.
Jockeyship and jumping over the final 3 fences, is likely to prove crucial.
If forced, I would side with Charbel to come out on top - but it’s really just a race to watch…

2:40

As I mentioned in the introduction, I was keen on Lord Napier in this - but his price has gone too short…
It is now drifting - he’s 7/1 on BF, which is acceptable - but no more than 11/2 with the bookmakers - which isn’t !
There really is nothing I can do about it (officially speaking !).
I’m loathed to tip early - but the bookmakers are very slow at pushing out the prices of horses that have been backed.
I suspect you will be able to get 7/1 quite easily, if you wait.
I wouldn’t be too surprised to see 8/1 or bigger.
In truth, that’s the price he should be - as whilst I think he as a good chance, it is a very competitive race in which a case can be made for at least half a dozen.
Frustrating !

3:15

The market looks to have got this one about right…
The most likely winners are Barney Dwan, Glen Rocco and Ballykan - and they occupy the top 3 places in the betting.
There are pros and cons associated with each, so choosing between them isn’t easy.
Of the 3, I marginally prefer the chances of Barney Dwan.
He’s not really delivered so far over fences - but he’s well handicapped and should be suited by todays test.
He’s also sporting first time cheek piece - and if they do perk him up, he could prove hard to beat…
Glen Rocco is stepping up in trip having stayed on strongly last time in a hot race over half a mile less.
He’s an inexperienced novice and his jumping is a slight concern - but if he gets round OK, he should run well.
Ballykan is arguable the most solid of the 3 - and he has a very good record at Kempton. He also has a marked preference for decent ground.
I would expect him to run his race - it’s just whether one of the other 2 are a bit too good for him.
Barney Dwan is drifting as I type this - and at 4/1 would be tempting.
However, 3/1 is the general price - and that’s a bit too short.

Warwick

1:15

I think it is worth taking a chance on Rock on Rocky in this…
It would appear that he’s been in poor form this season - but I think appearances could be deceptive !
Certainly, I felt he ran well enough at Ascot on his first chase outing of the season - and again at Cheltenham on his subsequent outing.
That said, he didn’t look like a winner waiting to happen, so it’s maybe not too surprising that his connections took action to ensure his handicap mark dropped a bit further !
He was held up out the back on his next run at Newbury (not his style of racing); and then set a strong pace last time, over a trip that was too far.
Unsurprisingly, he finished well beaten in both of those contests - but as a consequence, his handicap mark has dropped significantly.
He races today off a mark of 123 - which is 12lb lower than the mark he raced off at Ascot.
He can win off that mark - as he proved last season when successful at Newbury: in fact, he can win off quite a bit higher…
Whether he will win today, is a different matter.
The fact he has shown so little on his 2 most recent runs, means that I am guessing with regards to what’s going on.
However, this is a winnable race.
Movie Legend sets the standard - but it’s not overly high.
There is a chance that we will be on Rock on Rocky, a race too soon - but in a relatively weak contest, I felt he was worth a small risk at a decent price.

1:50

This looks far more open to me, than the early betting suggests…
Rockys Treasure has been put in a short priced favourite: but that’s because he’s been running very well recently - including when making Santini work hard for victory at Newbury.
Those kind of form lines are always attractive to people - so I wasn’t surprised to see him put in a short priced favourite.
And he may be able to justify market confidence - but he has little in hand of his rivals on official ratings - and there is a chance that he’s going to the well once too often, today…
Second favourite, OK Corral, owes his position in the market to his connections.
He’s trained by Nicky Henderson - but even more significant, Derek O Connor has flown over to ride him (in order to gain familiarity with the horse, prior to tackling the 4 miler at Cheltenham).
In the circumstances, he was always going to be a shorter price than his form warrants.
As a consequence the 2 to focus on from a ‘value’ perspective are Secret Investor and White Moon.
I quite like them both - but have a slight preference for the first named.
He’s only run once over fences - and shaped with a great deal of promise, when runner up to the street-wise Bags Groove, at Wincanton.
I would expect Secret Investor to improve on that run - and if he does, then he will go very close in this.
His lack of experience is a slight worry - as Warwick isn’t an easy course to jump round.
On the flip side, he has a good jockey on board and the small field will also help.

2:25

The defection of Birchdale has taken away any betting angles from this…
He had been installed a very short priced favourite - and I might have been tempted to take him on.
However, with him out, Tidal Flow looks a more solid favourite - and I’m disinclined to take him on.
That doesn’t mean he will win - but there is nothing in the field which I feel sufficiently strongly about, to warrant taking a risk.
Rockpoint looks a touch over-priced at 9/1 - but he does have to concede a penalty to the other runners.
I would expect him to run well - though I suspect that Tidal Flow will win…

3:00

I’m pretty keen on Impulsive Star in this - just a bit irritated that so many others have picked up on him !
I was kind of hoping that his most recent run at Plumpton would have put people off.
That was his seasonal debut - and he wasn’t at all impressive in finishing second in a 4 horse race (where only 3 finished).
however, I expect him to leave that run behind today…
For a start, he is likely to have come on for the outing - but additionally, cheek pieces have been reapplied.
That looks a key move, as he wore them last season, when finishing fourth in the 4 mile chase at the Cheltenham festival.
That was a massive run - he finished just behind Sizing Tennessee - and that one subsequently won the Ladbroke trophy and is now rated 163.
Impulsive Star on the other hand is rated 133 - and I’m absolutely sure he can win off that mark.
In fact, he hacked up over hurdles, off a mark jut 3lb lower, before being sent off favourite for the 2017 Pertemps final at the Cheltenham festival.
There is no doubt he is potentially well handicapped - and I think that today's 3m5f test should suit him perfectly.
There is likely to be plenty of pace in the race as the likes of Step Back, Cogry and Milansbar, all like to front run.
That will hopefully stretch the field out - and provided Sam Waley Cohen can get a good pitch and the horse jumps well, then I real think he will take a lot of beating.
In terms of dangers: then his stablemate, Caroles Destier is one - assuming he has fully recovered from his recent win: Whilst Duel at Dawn is another - and Step Back a third (if he can navigate a path through the potential front running issue).
That said, I don’t think any of them have as good a chance as Impulsive Star.
It’s fair to say, I’m pretty hopeful !

3:35

When I first looked at this race, I was very keen on First Assignment - but I’ve cooled on him…
He certainly has an attractive profile - as an improving hurdler, with good recent form.
He’s also up against generally more exposed horses - which added to his appeal.
The issue, is the race itself.
It’s a qualifier for the Pertemps series, the final of which is run at the Cheltenham festival.
All of the horses that finish in the top 6 in todays race, will qualify for the final - and I’m fearful that is what First Assignments connections will be targeting…
He is already rated high enough to run in the final - so winning today will actually lessen his chances of victory in March.
I’m not overly keen on siding with a horse who has a good reason not to win !
Ofcourse, connections might be happy to just take todays £15K first prize - but I’m not sure that will be the case…
If he’s not going to win, then it’s a hard race to fathom.
Blacklion certainly has a good chance based on his chase rating: whilst Lungaron Palace has a chance based on recent form - and could do with winning to get his rating high enough to make the final.
Races are hard enough to solve when you are playing with a straight bat - and I’m not convinced this is a race that can be played with a straight bat !
As a consequence, I’ll just be watching…

Fairyhouse

1:00

I tipped Lever du Soleil the last time he ran - and I think he is worth siding with again today.
He is an exuberant front runner and he disappointed me a little last time, as I expect him to go very close.
However, he wasn’t given his head by his jockey and found himself a sitting duck at the end of the race.
Ger Fox is back on board today and hopefully he will ride the horse more aggressively.
If he does, then I think his rivals will find him a tough one to pass.
Certainly his chance has improved this morning, with the defection of Havingagoodtime.
That one looked like a possible pace rival - so her absence has to improve the chances of Lever du Soleil.
Even from just a pure form perspective (so ignoring the possible tactical advantage), he has a decent chance.
He would probably have gone very close in the race that Get Trumped won; whilst Chief Justice and Coeur Sublime, the 2 horses that beat him last time, ran well in the big juvenile hurdle at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting.
There is a danger that one of the less exposed horses in todays race will take a a big step forward - but the market has factored that in.
Lever du Soleil on the other hand has been under-estimated - and for that reason, warrants support.

2:10

Just a few quick words on this race - as it is part of the Scoop 6 (which Craig is covering in the forum).
I liked the look of Blazer best - but he is risky and has been backed in to favouritism.
Kildorrery was the other one of interest - but again he has been well supported, so there is no value in the price.
That said, they would be my choices if I was trying to find the winner of the race !
Here’s hoping for a great day ahead !

Review of the day

I’ve taken off the corresponding weekend, for the past few seasons - and I think I might be doing to the same again next year !

As I suggested this morning, todays cards were uninspiring - and on the back of a very intense period, I probably should have left them alone.

In fairness, I did back off - but I still issued 3 tips on the day - and non of them ever looked particularly likely to collect...

Having said that, Western Miller managed to trade odds on in-running at Sandown, before weakening in to third place.

He ran quite a nice race - but never managed to establish the uncontested lead I hoped for - and ultimately that probably cost him.

Larry challenged him jumping the second last - and then scooted away for a comfortable win.
It was one for the Eye Catchers - but that was relatively slim consolation.

Mercy Mercy Me was the next tip to run - and he simply wasn’t up to the job.
That was a shame, because I suspect it wasn’t a particularly strong renewal of the race.

The short priced favourite, Rathill, was a big disappointment; which left Elixir de Nutz to fend off the 2 Paul Nichols runners, on the run in.

Court Royale was the final tip to run - but again he wasn’t up to the job in hand.

That said, I suspect his task was a bit harder - relatively speaking.

Certainly Monsieur Lecoq won the race in taking fashion – and Court Royale would have needed to be a fair way ahead of his mark, in order to win.

That wasn’t the case - and he ended up well beaten.

In terms of the days, Mentions:

Then the veterans chase at Sandown was a race well swerved !
That said, with the Venetia trained Houblon Des Obeaux winning, maybe I should have just gone with the trainer angle (instead of with Le Reve, who finished well beaten).

That would have worked quite nicely at Wincanton as well, where Venetia's Calipto was much too quick for Catamaran de Seuil, in the feature race.

Earlier on the card, Molineaux took advantage of poor jumping by most of his rivals (including Caltex); whilst Tedham and Tight Call fought out a finish of the unexposed runners in the handicap chase - with KK Lexion nowhere in sight..

All is all though, it was a pretty dull, by Saturday standards…

TVB.

Daily write-up - Jan 5th

There are 4 NH meetings today (not 3, as I said earlier in the week !): at Sandown, Wincanton and Newcastle in the UK - plus Cork in Ireland.

Realistically however, it’s only Sandown and Wincanton that are of interest - and neither of them hosts particularly inspiring cards.

Ofcourse, it’s understandable, as most of the best horses ran over the Christmas period, so it makes sense that the first couple of weeks the new year, will be relatively quite.

And that’s certainly the case today: the grade 1 Tolworth hurdle at Sandown, is the feature race - but it’s a 6 runner novice hurdle; with the veterans series final, the main supporting event.
Aside from that, there are half a dozen very tight handicaps in which most of the runners can be given a chance - and it’s not easy to find an angle.

As a consequence things are a bit light, tipping-wise - and I’ve ended up with just 3 on the day.

Here’s the rationale behind them - plus my thoughts on the days other main races…

Sandown

1:20

I think Western Miller is worth supporting in this…
He caught my eye on his seasonal debut at Wetherby, when he moved nicely in the lead, before tiring up the home straight.
I expected him to build on that next time at Taunton - and put him up as a selection on the mid week blog.
However, he ran disappointingly that day - and I’m not completely sure why.
He was taken on for the lead - and Taunton is a relatively sharp track - so maybe things just conspired against him.
He will need to bounce back from that run - but the handicapper has dropped him 4lb on the back of it, so that will help !
As a consequence, he now gets to run from a mark of 129 - and that makes him look potentially very well handicapped.
He was beaten just a neck over todays course and distance last November, when running from a mark 4lb higher.
He was also beaten in his 3 others runs last season; but 1 was at the Cheltenham festival - and the other 2 were decent novice chases.
In short, there have been reasons for all of his defeats, apart from the one at Taunton.
I’m hopeful that he will get an uncontested lead this afternoon - and if he does, then over a track where he has already performed well, he should take a bit of pegging  back.
Larry and Darius des Bois look the 2 biggest dangers.
Both are unexposed novices, who could have plenty of scope for improvement.
On the flip side, Sandown presents a stiff jumping challenge, so their lack of jumping experience could easily catch them out…

1:50

She’s obviously not a betting proposition, but it will be fascinating to see how Laurina gets on in this…
She was a massively impressive winner of the mares novice race at last season’s Cheltenham festival and followed that up by winning the grade 1 mares event at the Fairyhouse spring festival.
The form of neither race amounted to much - but it was the manner in which she won, that made you think she could be something special...
She is currently second favourite for the Champion hurdle - and neither of todays 2 rivals should really test her.
The expectation is that she will win - and win comfortably - though, even then, we are unlikely to learn much new.
Still, at least we will know that all is well with her - and that Buveur Dair might have a realistic challenger for his title…

2:25

I think it is worth taking a chance on Mercy Mercy Me in this…
He was a very decent bumper horse last season: finishing 8th in the Champion bumper at the Cheltenham festival, before disappointing in the Aintree equivalent (where he was sent off at just 4/1).
He’s only run twice over hurdles this season - and has been beaten on both occasions but there are reasons for thinking he could fare better today.
Both of his hurdle races have been run on heavy ground - and that seems not to suit him.
His debut effort was also over 2m4f, which appeared to stretch his stmaina.
Back over the minimum trip today - and on decent ground - I would expect him to put in a much improved showing.
Of course, even if he does, then he’s not guaranteed to win…
Elixir de Nutz, sets a decent standard - and the form of his last time out defeat of Jarveys Plate was stamped by the runner up in no uncertain terms, on New Years day.
Elixir isn’t even the favourite for todays race.
That honour goes to Rathill - though it’s based mainly on reputation rather than achievement on the track.
In fairness he was impressive when winning his sole hurdle race at Newbury last month - but he will need to step up significantly on that run, if he is to take this grade 1 contest.
The expectation is that he will do just that - but a price of even money , barely recognises the possibility that he won’t…
Paul Nicholls trains 2 of the remaining 3 runners - but I get the feeling that neither is particularly special (and that is backed up by the form book): Similarly the Dan Skelton trained Idee du Garde looks to be up against it…
In short this looks a winnable race.
I would expect Mercy Mercy Me to show improved form today - and whilst he will need to improve quite markedly to match the form already shown by Elixir, I think there’s a chance that he will do just that…

3:00

This is a nearly impossible race to fathom, with all 17 runners almost certainly having been aimed at it - and most of them potentially very well handicapped !
Unfortunately, most of them are also in decline - some serious decline - so trying to figure out which one will win, is like trying to hit a target which is moving in multiple directions !
That said, I considered taking a risk on Le Reve.
He has a tremendous record at the track - and is particularly well handicapped.
However, he’s only run once in the past 2 years - and whilst he showed definite promise, he still finished last of 3 !
More than that, he’s a 9/1 shot - and simply, that’s too short in a race of this nature…
If I were to formulate a short list, then in addition to him Rock Gone would be on it  along with his stable companion Band of Blood.
As too would Rathlin Rose and Kings Lad.
However, even with 5 stabs, I wouldn’t feel massively confident of getting one placed !
I think this is a race best watched and enjoyed.
One of the old boys will rewind the clock this afternoon - and it will hopefully be heart warming stuff.
What more can you ask from a race, really..?!

3:35

There is a lot of potential pace in this and I think that could set things up nicely for Court Royale.
Our Merlin will almost certainly lead: but Eragon de Chaney ran his best race from the front; whilst Monsieur Lecoq made all when winning at Ffos Las, last time.
The 3 of them may be able to work out something that doesn’t compromise their chances - but however it pans out, there should be a very strong gallop.
That will suit Court Royale perfectly, as he needs a test a 2 miles - though possibly doesn’t stay 2m4f.
He got a good test last time, and ran really well in the class 1 Betfair trophy, at Ascot.
I noticed him travelling strongly down the back straight - and whilst he didn’t manage to get involved at the finish he was ultimately only beaten 8 lengths in a much better race than todays.
The form of his previous run also looks good, as he beat Darling Maltex at Taunton - with the third placed horse a further 12 lengths back.
Darling Maltex hacked up on his next outing and is now rated 17lb higher than he was that day…
Court Royale on the other hand, is just 7lb higher today - so is arguably still well handicapped.
InN fairness, this does look a tight race - in which all, with the possible exception of aintemillion, can be given a chance.
That said, if the race does get run as I expect, then Court Royale is likely to be the biggest beneficiary - and he is also a horse on the up, who is potentially well handicapped.
In the circumstances, I think he is worth siding with..

Wincanton

2:05

Caltex was an official eye catcher last time - and I did wonder about tipping him in this.
I certainly think he’s got a chance, even though he was raised 5lb for finishing second on his last outing.
That was a relatively strong race - and it was also his debut run for Henry Oliver.
I would expect him to run well this afternoon - but this looks another very tight contest…
All 6 of the other runners can be given a chance, so it’s likely that factors such as tactics, jumping, rhythm and luck, will ultimately decide the winner (all of which are very difficult to predict in advance).
Aside from Caltex, the other one that particularly interests me is Midnight Maestro.
He was a fair handicap hurdler last season - and I could see him making a better chaser, this season.
That said, he didn’t show a great deal on his chasing debut at Uttoxeter, so will need to improve markedly to get involved this afternoon.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that was exactly what happened - though I am guessing…
Of the others, then Molineaux looks capable of improvement on what he’s achieved so far; whilst Enola Gay has to be respected, with Venetias horses running so well…
In short, this just looks a bit too trappy to get involved with.

2:40

This is yet another race in which plenty can be given a chance…
Tedham is the understandable favourite on his first run in a handicap.
His novice form suggest that he could be well handicapped with an opening mark of 125 - but that has been picked up by the market.
In terms of subtle signs, I would be a little concerned by the jockey booking.
I’ve nothing against Nick Scholfield, but he’s not a jockey I would expect Jonjo to use, if he had really teed one up…
However, even ignoring him, there are still quite a few of interest, in the race…
Second favourite, Dark Episode is even less exposed than Tedham - as is third favourite, TIght Call !
I doubt all 3 will prove to be thrown in on their handicap debuts - but it would be no surprise if one of them is.
I was half tempted by KK Lexion.
He hacked up in the corresponding race, 2 years ago - and is only 3lb higher today.
He’s also got a 7lb claimer on his back - so it theoretically well weighted.
However, he’s not been in the best of form recently - and whilst it would be no surprise to see him bounce back, even if he does, he’s till got to get the better of the handicap debutantes…
On balance, another race best watched.

3:15

Without wanting to sound like a broken record (!), this is another tight handicap…
Catamaran du Seuil is the one that appeals most - and I did briefly consider tipping him.
He won well on his seasonal debut at Wetherby, before falling when faced with the big fences at Aintree - and then running unplaced in the Caspian Caviar Gold cup at Cheltenham.
He’s got a more realistic chance this afternoon - and I could certainly see him running well.
The trouble is, he faces 6 rivals, all of whom can be given a chance.
Copain de Classe does look the most dangerous one - but he’s favourite, and there's no margin in a price of 5/2.
Venetia’s Calipto is the other one who really catches the eye - but again, the market is wise to him.
In short, it’s another race, where I can’t really see much of an angle…

Here’s hoping for a great day ahead !

Review of the day

I’ve always believed that actions speak louder than words: It was all well and good me wishing you all a Happy New Year - but did I really mean it ?!

Well, I think the 1 pointers this afternoon, answered that Winking smile

What a pleasing way to begin the New Year – and it got off to the best possible start, with the very first tip to run: Beware the Bear.

As I said this morning, the key to him, was the blinkers having the desired effect - and boy did they have the desired effect !

I was actually a little concerned when he jumped the first in the lead, that they may have lit him up too much !
That said, he appeared to be travelling and jumping nicely - so I was optimistic that they had just put an edge on him.

And that’s exactly how it turned out.

One by one his rivals tried to close on him - but one by one they gave up an unequal struggle.

He was over 10 lengths clear turning in - and whilst he was definitely starting to tire, as he climbed the final hill, he had enough in reserve to hold of Shanroe Santos.

A tremendous start to the day !

And then things got even better…

As I said this morning, I was very keen on Lostintranslation - mainly because he had ticks in every box - and was facing opponents who didn’t.

He too set off in the lead - but he was stalked throughout by Defi du Seuil.

Unlike Beware the Bear, Lostintranslation never managed to build up a huge lead - and when Defi jumped past him, at the second last, it did look as if it might be game over.

However, Defi had raced freely in the early stages - and I wasn’t entirely convinced that he would get home.

And that’s how it tuned out, with Robbie Power galvanising Lost up the hill - to haul back a tiring Defi…

Great stuff !

Aux Ptits Soins was the final 1pt tip to run on the day - and I did fancy him.

I felt it was simply a question of whether Dan Skelton had manage to get him back to his best, after a promising run at Newbury.

Well, I think we can categorically say that he has !

He cruised through the race - and when Harry said ‘go’ turning in, the race was over in a matter of strides.

He idled a bit on the run-in - but still came home 7 lengths clear of the runner up.

Well I did say he might take the race apart !.

Even at SP, the treble paid over 100/1 - and I’m aware of at least 2 of you who achieved just that - and probably beat SP for good measure !

A very nice way to bring in the new year !

The days 2 other tips were a little mote speculative - and staked accordingly.

Both ran fair races - but ultimately weren’t good enough.

Foxtail Hill led over the first - as I hoped he might - and looked to be going pretty well at half way.
However, Jamie Bargary then seemed to ease off a little (presumably trying to save something for later) and Aso quickly closed up and then took over the lead.

Foxtail Hill hung in there for a little while - but he was never likely to fight back and eventually finished well beaten.

I suspect he wants returning to the minimum trip - over which he might still have a race in him.

Cryus Darius was the final tip on the day - and he also ran a fair race.
He was settled in last - but travelled well enough, until the pace increased after jumping the second last.

That caught him out - and he wasn’t able to make up ground against quickening horses.
Ultimately, he just wasn’t good enough…

That was also the case for the days 2 Mentions: with Upsilon Bleu running poorly at Musselburgh and Alpha Des Obeaux no match for Willies 3 seasonal debutantes at Tramore.

As for the Dobbers;
Like everything else in the race, Thomas Crapper never stood a change against  Beware the Bear - and consequently, he didn’t trade low.
Cyrus Darius just about managed to DOB however, with a BSP of 23 and an IR low of 9.2 (I think !).

All in all, not a bad day Smile

Daily write-up - Jan 1st

There are 7 NH meetings today: 5 in the UK - and 2 in Ireland.
Another busy day !

Before I get on to that, however: Happy New Year !

Sincere best wishes for 2019 - I hope turns out a great year for you all :)

Right - pleasantries over, down to business !

The main meeting today, takes place at Cheltenham: though there is a reasonable supporting card at Musselburgh - and a couple of fair races at Exeter.
There is also a cracking chase on the Tramore card !

I had a good look at the 2 big races at Musselburgh - but didn’t feel particularly strongly about anything.

In the 1:40 race, Upsilon Bleu looks to have a good chance of reversing last seasons result with Knockgraffon - but he’s 3/1 - and the other 3 runners, all have a chance.

I’ve no idea what will win the feature race on the card (2:15) - and I don’t really want to guess !

Over at Tramore, the big race looks to rest between the 3 market principals.
My feeling is that Alpha Des Obeaux could well take advantage of his race fitness and beat the Willie Mullins trained runners - but again, I didn’t feel sufficiently strongly to
consider getting properly involved…

So it all comes down to Cheltenham !

Thankfully, they stage a really good card, with 5 races of definite interest.
I obviously have views on them all - and surprise, surprise, I also felt there was just about enough in the prices this morning, to warrant tipping in all 5 !

One quick thing, before I get on to the main preview:

I’ve been meaning to add a list, at the bottom of the write-up, to cover potential ‘dobbers’ (‘double or bust’, for those not in the know !).
These are horses who I think are likely to half in price on BF, in-running (BSP compared to in-running low).
I often point them out in the write-up (Valadom was one on Saturday) - so this is merely a more structured way of recording them.
Hopefully, a few of you will find it an interesting addition to the write-up - and they will also turn out to be profitable to follow !

Anyway, here is the rationale behind the days tips - along with my thoughts on the other main races on the Cheltenham card (plus the first official Dobbers !).

Cheltenham

12:50

This is a very competitive race, but I think it’s worth taking a chance on Beware the Bear…
He’s back down to a mark just 1lb higher than the one he won the rehearsal chase from last year- and 4lb lower than when 4th at last season Cheltenham festival.
He’s therefore a well handicapped horse - but that’s not the big appeal…
He’s also a very lazy horse - and I’m hoping that the application of first time blinkers this afternoon, will galvanise him !
He wore cheek pieces for the first time, on his most recent run in the Ladbroke trophy, at Newbury.
I watched him quite closely that day - and whilst he wasn’t transformed by the application of head gear - it did seem to make him race with more enthusiasm.
Blinkers are a more severe method of getting a horse to focus - but the suggestion from that run, is that they could well work for him.
If they do, then I think he will take a lot of beating…
Todays trip is a minimum for him - but there is likely to be a strong pace, so stamina will be needed.
I’ve also generally have a bit of an issue with horses carrying more than 12 stone - but he’s a big brute and I reckon he’ll be able to cope with it !
Of his rivals, then Some Chaos and Rolling Dylan are both solid options - but neither set an insurmountable standard and they’ve been well found in the market.
Perfect Candidate and The Druids Nephew are handicapped to win - but they have both just turned 12 and there must be a chance that the years are catching up with them.
Aside from Beware the Bear, the one that interest me most, is Thomas Crapper.
He too is now 12 - but he’s been in good form, recently.
I was very tempted by him - but I just think the 3m2f trip will catch him out.
I can see him cantering into the lead (and trading low in running) - but I can also see Beware the Bear running him down after the last.
Now that would be a nice way to start the new year, wouldn’t it ?!

1:25

I’m really keen on Lostintranslation in this - I’m just very disappointed with his price !
Up against 3 extremely well touted rivals, I thought he would be 4th favourite - and maybe available at around 5/1 - but alas, no !
He’s been backed into near favouritism - though hopefully his price will drift a little, closer to the off…
In terms of why I like him: then it’s primarily down to his 2 runs this season, against Le Bague au Roi.
We saw on Boxing day, just how good she is - and whilst she has had his measure on both occasions - he’s made her fight for her wins.
That is top class novice chase form - and whilst the 3 other horses at the head of market, have the potential to match it, non of them has done so yet.
More than that, Black Op and Defi de Seuil would prefer softer ground than they will get today; whilst On the Blind Side is making his chasing debut (and his seasonal debut)
Maybe this all explains why Lotintranslation is so popular in the market !
In fact, it wouldn’t massively surprise me if his main danger turns out to be the outsider of the field, Crucial Role.
He had no pretentions to this level over hurdles - but looked good when wining a decent novice chase at Uttoxeter last time.
That said, he didn’t face anything of the calibre of Lostintranslation..!

2:00

This is a strange race in so much as I can see reasons why just about every runner can’t win it !
Off a mark of 158, Aso is surely too high in the handicap: whilst it’s a lot to ask for Divine Spear or Give me a Copper to take it on their seasonal debuts (particularly as both lack chasing experience).
Ballyhill will have quite a job on, trying to repeat last years success, having been raised 10lb for his last time out win: whilst Happy Diva arrives on the back of a nasty fall - and would prefer softer ground.
Dustin des Mottes seems to have limitations - though he is still relatively unexposed in this country, so can’t be completely dismissed; whilst Born Survivor is probably still fairly handicapped and comes here a fresh horse (which is in his favour).
I was half tempted by the last 2 named - though I do have some doubts about Born Survivor getting up the Cheltenham hill…
Almost by a process of elimination, I arrived at Foxtail Hill.
He’s a horse that I’ve tipped to win in the past - when he was successful in a similar race to todays, 2 years ago.
He ran off a mark just 2lb lower that day - and against a stronger field - so from a handicapping perspective, he has a definite chance.
I also think there is a possibility that he’ll get an uncontested lead today.
There is no guaranteed pace in the race, and I’ll be a little disappointed if Jamie Bargary doesn’t ride him aggressively.
That’s been the case for his 2 most recent wins, which were both gained over todays course.
By contrast, last time out he was settled in last - and didn’t greatly improve that position throughout the race !
On the plus side, he was dropped 3lb by the handicapper...
I suspect we will know our fate quite early with him.
If Foxtail Hill jumps the first in the lead, then I’ll be cautiously optimistic - if that’s not the case, then my expectations for a favourable result, won’t be overly high !!

2:35

I do think there is a chance that Aux Ptits Soins could take this race apart…
He won the Coral Cup on his UK debut, almost 3 years ago - and at that point in time, it looked as if he could be anything.
I can’t recall a horse ever winning on it’s UK debut at the Cheltenham festival - and he really did appear to be something special...
However, apart from a few flickers of promise, he’s subsequently been a disappointment.
It was therefore very interesting to see him reappear at Newbury in November, representing the stable of Dan Skelton.
Not many horses improve for leaving Paul Nicholls – but owner John Hales, took the same path with Al Ferof a few years back, and the move rekindled his flame.
I guess it just comes down to a change of scenery and routine - and has to be worth a go, if all else has failed !
Anyway, in the Newbury race, Aux Ptits Soins travelled like the wroth of god - until the second last hurdle - when he seemed to blow up.
All the same it was a hugely promising - and eye catching run - and if he can build on that today, I think he will outclass his rivals.
He is back down to a mark just 2lb higher than he won the Coral cup from - and this is no Coral cup !
Ofcourse there is a chance that he will go backwards from the run - but at 11/2, I think its worth the risk to find out…
If he doesn’t perform as hoped, then this is a difficult race to unpick.
A case can be made for most of the runners - with Juge et Parti looking the best value, at around 14/1.
However, if Aux Ptits Soins brings his ‘A’ game to the party, I think the rest will be playing for second place…

3:10

Despite what the betting suggests, this looks a pretty open race to me and I think it is worth taking a chance of Cyrus Darius…
On official ratings, he has a lot to do - but that is mainly because he’s been dropped 6lb for his 2 runs this season -which I think is very generous of the assessor !
Certainly I felt he shaped with a good deal of promise on his seasonal debut at Haydock (he was an official eye catcher that day): and whilst he did nothing on his most recent run at Ascot, that race was never going to suit him…
I think he will be much better suited by todays small field - and it strikes me as interesting that Colin Tizzard is letting him run, just 11 days after Ascot.
The suggestion is that he took little out of himself - and I would agree with that.
I did have a slight concern that today good to soft ground might be a bit quick for him as he is very effective in the heavy. However he’s won on good to soft in the past - and the decent ground should ensure that todays race doesn’t turn into a slog (which I don’t  think would suit him).
I suspect he will be given a patient ride by Robbie Power - sitting out the back - and then look to deliver a challenge up the home straight.
At that point, we are likely to find out whether he is good enough…!
If he’s not, then I think Old Guard will be the one who takes advantage.
He has a lot in his favour today - though he has already run plenty of times this season, and that might catch him out.
He also has to give Cyrus Darius 6lb - and if the latters rating hadn’t been dropped, that would make them virtually the same horse (which is roughly how I would see it).
However, Old Guard is a 4/1 shot – so with Cyrus available at 16/1, I was only ever going to jump one way !

Here’s hoping for a great day ahead !
