Review of the day

I felt much happier with the tips that I issued today, than I had done with the ones I issued yesterday - so it’s a bit ironic that they yielded nothing !

In fairness, they all ran well - as is suggested by a second and three third placings - but you get nothing in this game for running well.

You generally need things to drop in your favour, if you are going to win - and that didn’t quite happen this afternoon…

I think the situation with the Lever de Soleil typified this…

He was the first tip to run - and he ran creditably to finish third.
However, I’m sure he could have done better.

As expected, he took up a front running role - but I don’t think his jockey got his fractions quite right.

The horse’s main asset is stamina, but Ger Fox set a relatively pedestrian pace on him.
As a consequence, he was there be shot at up the home straight - and 3 of his rivals just quickened past him.

You could tell that he still had plenty to give.
He was passed by 3 horses after jumping the second last - but battled his way back to regain third on the run in.

A more aggressive ride would have played to his strengths of stamina and jumping - ridden as he was, he was always going to be vulnerable to quicker horses…

To rub slat into the wound, we were on the wrong side of a sublime front running ride in the very next race.

Ruby produced a master class on Quick Grabim - and well as Triplicate ran, he had no answer to it.

Quick Grabim wasn’t an obvious front runner (I expected Commander of Fleet to take on that role), as he’d prove difficult to settle in the past.
However, Ruby took him to the front and horse just lobbed along, at the head of affairs.

It was a very similar ride to the one Ger Fox had given Lever de Soleil - but the difference this time was that Ruby knew he was on the fastest horse in the race.
Therefore when he was challenged entering the home straight, he just used the horses acceleration to quicken away from his toiling rivals.

Triplicate ran on stoically to finish second - and in a different scenario, I reckon he could reverse the form - but that will have to wait for another day…

What was already a frustrating day, became even more so, when Jetz just wouldn’t settle in the Drinmore.
He was stepping up in trip - which I guess didn’t help - but he pulled Robbie Powers arms out.

Eventually he let him have his head - but the increase in pace played into the hands of Delta Work.
He was challenged over the last by Le Richebourg - but his stamina reserves won the day.

Jetz did very well to hang on for third place - with Discorama a few lengths behind, in a slightly disappointing fifth.
There were no excuses for him - he just didn’t look up to the grade….

Limini was the final tip to run - and there were no excuses for her, either.

I feared that Apples Jade might have improved for her seasonal debut - and boy had she !

Rarely will you see a grade 1 event won with such authority.
In that kind of form, Apples Jade is just about unbeatable.

Again, to her credit, Limini stayed on well for third.

If I’d done everything EW, it would have been a decent day !

Undressed was the only Mention on the day - and having looked likely to win,  turning for home, he then either ran out of stamina - or was let down by his fitness.
Which ever, he couldn’t get to Dinnies Vinnie, who was a very welcome winner for Chris’s System bets.
Finally, I wasn’t sure whether Wonder Laish was still well handicapped on a mark 17lb higher than for his recent win - but the late money suggest he was - and it was right !
He may only have got home by half a length - but the acceleration he showed to get to the front, was most impressive.
He might struggle to cope with another 17lb hike - but he’s probably still got at least 10lb in hand of his current mark…
